In their fiftieth year, the Takács Quartet continues to do what few ensembles can: bring the string quartet tradition to life with warmth, imagination and purpose.

Earlier this year, they appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk, performing a short set in the broadcaster’s Washington D.C. office. It was an intimate and quietly joyful moment, showcasing their signature blend of technical brilliance and conversational ease. Classical music isn’t often heard in such a setting, but the Takács made it feel completely natural.

Formed in 1975 by four students of the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the Takács Quartet has evolved artistically, geographically, and personally across five decades, remaking itself with each new era, while staying true to the profound intimacy and complexity of the string quartet tradition. Founding cellist András Fejér now plays alongside violinists Edward Dusinberre, Harumi Rhodes, and violist Richard O’Neill.

Now, this legendary quartet returns to Australia, as part of Musica Viva Australia’s 80th anniversary season. It is a joyful pairing, two institutions with long histories, both dedicated to keeping chamber music vibrant and alive.

The Takács Quartet will be joined by Australian actor Angie Milliken in a new work by Cathy Milliken exploring Bertold Brecht's poetry.
